Lightbulb Ferns

Blechnum gibbum

This tree fern will form a slender trunk with age. The palm like fronds will form a crown about 3 foot across in time creating a very tropical looking plant. Blechnums are lime intolerant so use rainwater or as a last resort if you are in a hard water area add a few drops of lemon juice to the water! Great for an East or West facing window.

Site: Light shade.

Temp: Average warmth.

Water: Water well in the growing season but do not allow the compost to become waterlogged. Misting is good but the leaves do not like to be wet for long so keep well ventilated.

Feeding: A liquid feed every month or so.

Tip: Bronze fronds are not a feature! This can be caused by a lack of ventilation and over watering.

Nephrolepis exaltata bostoniensis Boston Fern

This fern was discovered a century ago in Boston (The name gave it away!) this graceful variation on the sword fern (N. exaltata) has become a common sight in rooms all over the world. It is one of the easiest ferns to grow inside giving a mass of soft foliage all year round in exchange for a small amount of care.

Site: Light Shade.

Temp: Average.

Water: Water well throughout the growing season and less over winter. Loves a misting as often as you can. A pebble tray would also be beneficial.

Feeding: Apply a weak liquid feed every three weeks or so.

Tip: A great plant for a bathroom

Dicksonia squarrosa brown tree fern or Wheki

From New Zealand this tree fern has as well as a slim graceful trunk, dark veining on the underside of the long featherlike fronds. Perfect for a north facing conservatory or large well lit room. Part of our fascination with the tree ferns is the speedy unfurling of the long fronds as they emerge from the furry centre of the trunk.

Site: A relatively well lit location without any direct sun.

Temp: Average to cool. Does not like to bake.

Water: Well watered, tree ferns can absorb water through their trunks so try not to let this or the crown dry out.

Feeding: A very weak liquid feed can be watered over the leaves and trunk every two weeks or so through the growing season.

Tip: Old fronds can be trimmed back to the trunk to keep a tidy appearance.
